The Safe and Sound Protocol FAQ

What is the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP?)

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a non-invasive, evidence-based auditory intervention developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, based on his Polyvagal Theory. It is designed to calm the nervous system, improve regulation, support emotional and physiological safety, and enhance social engagement.

How can SSP help me?

SSP can help by reducing feelings of being overwhelmed, improving emotional regulation, and supporting a sense of calm and connection. It creates a foundation for healing, learning, social engagement, and peak performance by improving focus, resilience, and confidence.

Who is SSP for?

SSP is suitable for individuals of all ages experiencing challenges with anxiety, ADHD, sensory processing, trauma, emotional regulation, or performance-related stress. It’s also helpful for those seeking to enhance resilience and overall well-being.

How does SSP work?

SSP uses specially filtered music to gently stimulate the vagus nerve and regulate the autonomic nervous system. Delivered through headphones in a safe, supported setting, the music is designed to improve the way the brain and body respond to stress in order to shift the body out of a fight-or-flight state and into a calm, grounded state of readiness and connection. It is often used in conjunction with psychotherapy to enhance the effectiveness of treatment by creating a foundation of safety and readiness for deeper therapeutic work. All that is needed are a set of over the ear headphones and access to the app via a smart phone or tablet.
